1. Published anonymously in a Boston Magazine on September 8, 1882 and never copyrighted


2. June 22, 1942 the United States Congress included the Pledge to the Flag in the United States Flag Code (Title 36).

Today's version Of Our National Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag includes the words One Nation Under God, This version was made official by American President Dwight D. Eisenhower followed by these words which are now a famous quote

"In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war." Quote - President Dwight D. Eisenhower (Flag Day) June 14, 1954

Who wrote the words to our Nation's Pledge Of Allegiance To The American Flag of The United States Of America? The general assumption is that Francis Bellamy wrote the original version of Our Nation's Pledge To The American Flag. But?

The Year 1892 Francis Bellamy was chairman of the National committee of educators and civic leaders planning the much anticipated October 12, 1892 Columbus Day celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America. Another member of that committee and candidate for authorship or possible co-writer was James Upham. James Upham was an employee of the Boston publishing firm that produced "The Youth's Companion" Magazine in which The Pledge Of Allegiance first appeared. To this day it remains unknown who actually authored The Pledge.

Which of the two men actually authored the words That's a good question. With only assumptions to go on, today's proof of authorship is simply circumstantial. The never copyrighted original version of Our National Pledge of Allegiance To The American Flag was published anonymously in the September 8, 1892 issue of Boston magazine "The Youth's Companion". It is possible that assumptions are wrong. James Upham may have been co-author or even the true author of The Pledge
