Patriotic American History:
The story of The Star Spangle Banner and song Lyrics by Francis Scott Key

The History of the Star Spangled Banner

Major George Armistead, The commander of Fort McHenry, knowing that Baltimore's Fort McHenry would be a prize target by the British, had an oversized flag of fifteen stars and fifteen stripes made for the fort. This custom made flag flew over Fort McHenry for over a year before the night of the bombardment that inspired Francs Scott Key writng down the poem The Star Spangle Banner.

This is the story of the night that inspired Francis Scott Key
to write the poem The Star Spangle Banner.

During the War of 1812 Francis Scott Key was sent to the British fleet in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes on September 13, 1814. Dr. William Beans a local Maryland official had been placed under military arrest by the British during a raid on Washington to release a British Soldier who had been arrested for being drunk. Key retrieved Beanes, but his ship was detained because the British were preparing to bombard Fort McHenry.

What had This Local Official Done?
Why Did The British place Dr. William Beans under Military Arrest?

Dr William Beanes had arrested two drunken British soldiers. One escaped, and a small force of British Soldiers in a raid descended on Upper Marlboro, Maryland to secure the release of the other British Soldier. Beans was simply doing his job by placing a drunk under arrest. He should not have been placed under British Military arrest for doing his job as a local Maryland official.

All Night The British Bombarded Fort McHenry

Key was forced to wait and watch as the British attacked Fort McHenry. Fort McHenry tried in vain to return fire but their cannons were too small to reach the attacking British Ship. The Americans on the detained ship waited through the night to see if the fort had been captured.

The American Flag,
Red, White And Blue, Stars And Stripes Still Stood!

Dawn broke, and Fort McHenry's large flag still flew bravely in the morning breeze. Inspired by the moment, Francis Scott Key jotted some notes on the back of a letter in his pocket. Later in his hotel room in Baltimore, he completed a poem, an ode to the night the British attacked Fort McHenry.

Sing along to the words online to the song
The Star Spangle Banner

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when free-men shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
